Lots of Slots in the Casino

Taking advantage of the two-armed playing habit of many slot players, casinos will position a "generous" machine between two that keep a much larger percentage for the house.

That way, even if you've got hold of a "payer" with one hand, you're feeding your winnings into the "taker" with the other.

As for slots outside the big casinos, forget them. If a gas station, or a caf owner, puts in a couple of slots, it's purely to bring in more dough. Small retailers have no use for 'loss leaders", and slots in places like this usually keep 50 percent, or more, for the house.

Not that the odds on any machine paying off in any one play are anything to write home about. On a machine with three tumblers, for example, there are 8,000 possible combinations on each spin.

If you've ever operated a slot machine, you know that maybe only four or five of those combinations pay anything at all. Most people who play the slots for anything but a casual nickel, or so, have no idea of the staggering odds are against them on any roll.

Furthermore, there really is nothing in the rule book that says a machine that hasn't paid off for a long time is "due". As emphasized, no smart gambler plays the averages. It may take two lifetimes for things to average out.

On the other hand, the slots are fun for lots of folks, and there's nothing wrong with having a turn once in a while. The best feeling you can possibly get from the slots is the kind of thing where you can walk through the lounge, toss a couple of dollars into one of the big machines, and $50,000 falls out into your lap.

It might happen, but you're a fool if you expect it to, or chase after it with more than a couple of dollars.

The next best feeling you can get is the one just after you walk away - you've spent dollars, and that's all.

Can you beat the slots? It's not likely. The new machines are so impervious to cheating, or systems, that you'd need to go at them with a blow torch to "fix" them in any way.

There is nothing simple like a slug or a wire that can possibly jimmy the sensitive innards of these bandits. You may have heard about a system of playing where the rhythm of the handle is coordinated with the clicks and whims of the mechanism inside.

It may have worked for a few people on the old machines, but the new ones are rhythm-proof, too. If you insist on going at the slots in a serious way, the best advice is to play only with the house's money -a cardinal rule for any kind of gambling.

If you win a small jackpot on the nickel machine, move over to a dollar-eater and try your luck until your nickel pot is gone. But don't pour your own money in after a run of bad luck: when you've lost your jackpot, quit.
