Winning in Slots, Jackpots and Prize Ranges

Slots are not quite games of chance. There is some skill involved. But it does not lie in the games themselves. Rather the strategy is in the betting and in the choice of the slot machine to play.

Choosing the Right Slot Machine

A common mistake of slots players is chasing huge jackpots. This is a mistake because in truth, slots with big jackpots tend to pay out less often than less lucrative machines. Usually the bigger the jackpot prize - especially progressive ones - the fewer the lesser prizes. This is the casino's way of "making up for" the big jackpot prizes. See, jackpot prizes don't come from the casinos. They come from players like you. And to fund those big jackpots, the casinos have to make more players lose more often. So the top prizes may be big, but the lesser prizes listed on the pay table are paid out less often. On the other hand, slots with smaller top prizes can afford pay out lesser prizes more often. This is because they have less to give away for the jackpot.

So for the same bet, you have more chances of winning the equivalent of 500 coins than 15,000 coins.

So if you want to win more consistently in slots, don't be ambitious. Ignore the huge prizes. Go for the smaller wins that you have more chances of winning.

Prize Range

Another tip to is to look at the prize range. If half of the payouts are in the 2-20 coin range, you are playing in a very thrifty machine. You may get paid often, but the pay is too small. The 20 and below must only be about 1/3 of the total pay table. You want to win more medium-range prizes most often. This will help preserve your bankroll. With a sufficient bankroll, you can play long enough (hopefully) until one of the big hits come.

Slot Machine Strategy

Here is a simple slots strategy.

Start with a $100 bankroll. Pick a three-reel quarter machine with a one payline and a decent payout like 800 coins for one-coin play or slightly higher. You can play in two or three coin machines. Make sure the slot machine has a good medium-range pay out since this is where most of your winnings must come from.

Play until you have either used up your $100 worth of coins or hit the jackpot. It does not matter if you are betting one coin at a time only. You are not chasing the big jackpots. If you hit the 800 coin prize, that's enough. Until you hit it, keep playing. Use the small and medium range winnings to keep spinning. The more you spin, the more likely the jackpot will hit.

The key here is to survive long enough through the hot and cold phases of the machine. So that's why it's important to have medium range winnings to keep your bankroll afloat. If you can keep you bankroll alive, you will live long enough to hit the jackpot. When that top prize hits, you want to be there.
